Toni Morrison spoke late last month to a group of Google employees in New York City as part of the search engine company’s “Hangout” series.  Morrison, an 82 year-old Nobel Prize laureate, spoke about how technology, specifically Google technology, has helped speed up the time it takes her to create her works from months to weeks as she no longer needs to go to the library to do research on her pieces.

The “Beloved,” “Song of Solomon” and “Home” author is currently researching her newest novel set in the 1950s and used the internet to research specific information of how blacks were denied the right to rent or buy homes in Seattle.  Although she knew this to be the case anecdotally, she found actual lease arrangements through Google.

Morrison also told the crowd that she now prefers nonfiction writing on blogs to that of fiction. That’s quite a ringing endorsement of a relatively new technologic medium coming from this Nobel literature laureate, Pulitzer Prize winner, Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient and likely most important when it comes to book sales, the second author selected for Oprah’s Book Club.
